This is the story of replantations (the surgical reattachment of a body part, most commonly a fingerhand or arm, that has been completely cut from a person's body) in Bulgaria. This is also the story of a doctor who has been awarded physician of the year by the Bulgarian Medical Association. But mostly, this is the story of "the ugly duckling", unwanted as a descendant of the family of "the enemy of the people" in communist times, who manages to preserve the life work of supportive doctors through new social whirlwinds, and to protect hundreds of Bulgarians from becoming people with disabilities.
